Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam announced its establishment. The school partnered with Nanyang Technological University IBM and Creative Technology. These included fundamentals of electronics media studies and digital video production. Design studies biotechnology and environmental science and technology were also added. Students could even choose up to two of these applied subjects.

The School of Science and Technology Singapore opened its doors in 2010. Its inaugural class of 200 students were welcomed at a temporary campus. The recruitment of teachers began in 2008. Chua Chor Huat became the first principal. Su Guaning was the first chairman of the board. The school received over 1100 applications for its first intake. An entrepreneurship advisory council was established to foster innovation. Ngee Ann Kongsi generously donated S$8.1 million for scholarships and bursaries. The groundbreaking ceremony for the permanent campus took place in 2010. The School of Science and Technology Singapore’s permanent campus opened in 2012.

The School of Science and Technology Singapore offers a four-year curriculum. It leads to O-Levels or direct entry to a STEM diploma at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Students benefit from small class sizes. This allows for more teacher-student interaction. The Integrated Diploma Programme launched in 2020. It allows students to bypass O-Levels for direct polytechnic entry. The School of Science and Technology Singapore boasts a 6.7-acre campus. It’s located at 1 Technology Drive. The campus is situated opposite Singapore Polytechnic. Its construction cost S$49 million.
