Nestled at the tip of Nanyang Technological University’s South Spine, the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) whispers tales of scientific discovery. The SPMS isn’t just a building; it’s a crucible where knowledge is forged. Officially opened in 2009 by Dr Ng Eng Hen, Singapore’s Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, the SPMS building complex stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to scientific advancement. This state-of-the-art facility was meticulously designed to foster a thriving environment for both education and groundbreaking research. Within its walls, over 100 faculty members, 250 research staff, and 25 administrative staff collaborate. The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences houses two main divisions: Mathematical Sciences, and Physics & Applied Physics. They offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs, nurturing over 2000 undergraduate and 350 graduate students pursuing BSc, PhD, and MSc degrees. The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, established in 2005, is a key component of NTU’s College of Science. It’s a place where mathematicians design algorithms that power our digital world, physicists unravel the mysteries of the universe, and chemists create innovative materials that shape our future. The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences is more than just classrooms and laboratories. It is a dynamic hub where future generations of scientists are equipped not only with technical expertise but also with crucial soft skills like communication and critical thinking, essential for navigating the complex challenges of our time.
