From its very heart, Schlossplatz extends its influence over Karlsruhe. It’s more than just a square. It is the core from which the city unfolds, like a fan. Schlossplatz takes its name from the magnificent Karlsruhe Palace. The palace has witnessed centuries of history. It stands as a testament to the vision of Margrave Charles III William. He laid the foundation stone for both the palace and the city in 1715. He envisioned Schlossplatz as the central point. From this point, 32 streets radiate outwards, creating the city’s unique fan shape. Karlsruhe Palace wasn’t always the grand baroque structure we admire today. The original palace, built between 1715 and 1718, was partly made of wood. It later underwent extensive renovations. Architects like Balthasar Neumann, Albrecht Friedrich von Kesslau, and Wilhelm Jeremias Müller shaped its current appearance. Müller, notably, connected the originally freestanding tower to the main building. He crowned it with the iconic dome we see today. The palace served as the residence and seat of government for Baden’s rulers for nearly two centuries. It holds within its walls stories of margraves, electoral princes, and grand dukes. In 1921, after the end of the monarchy, the palace took on a new role. It became home to the Baden State Museum (Badisches Landesmuseum). Tragically, much of Karlsruhe, including the palace, was devastated by bombing in World War II. The palace was meticulously rebuilt, preserving its historical exterior. The interior, however, was modernized to accommodate the museum’s needs. Today, the Badisches Landesmuseum thrives within the restored walls of Karlsruhe Palace, right here at Schlossplatz. It showcases a vast collection. You’ll find artifacts from prehistory to the 21st century. This vibrant museum at the heart of Schlossplatz adds another layer to the square’s rich history. So, as you stand in Schlossplatz, remember you are standing at the center of Karlsruhe, a city literally designed to revolve around this very spot.
