Consider Margrave Dietrich of Meissen. He ordered the construction of Tharandt Castle in the early 13th century. Its purpose? To defend against the Counts of Dohna.
Today, we stand before Schloss Tharandt. It is near the ruins of that original medieval fortress. The castle’s story is one of strategic importance and architectural evolution.
Let’s journey back to 1224. A war campaign led to the castle’s destruction by fire. But from 1240 to 1256, it rose again. By the late 14th century, Tharandt Castle was among the strongest in the region. The Counts of Dohna lost power between 1385 and 1402. As a result, Tharandt Castle’s defensive role diminished.
During the Hussite invasion of 1429, the castle saw conflict. Its strength made it a safe place. Important documents and valuables of the Elector were stored here.
From 1476, Duchess Sidonie called the castle home temporarily. She was the daughter of Bohemian King George of Podiebrad. Her marriage to Duke Albrecht of Saxony sealed the Treaty of Cheb. This treaty defined the Saxon-Bohemian border that still exists today. Sidonie lived at Tharandt Castle permanently from 1500 until her death in 1510. After that, the castle was abandoned. It was gradually dismantled.
In the years 1626 to 1629, the neighboring mountain church was built. It was built on part of the castle grounds using materials from the castle.
The late 18th century saw a renewed interest in the castle ruins. This was during the height of castle romanticism. Many artists depicted the ruins in paintings and drawings.
Now, look at Schloss Tharandt beside the ruins. It was built between 1858 and 1861. Initially, it served as a sculptor’s studio. A new owner transformed it into a romantic residential castle in Moorish-Oriental Tudor style in 1866. A fire in 1936 shaped its current appearance.
The Tharandt Forestry School used the castle until 2000. This school is now part of the TU Dresden. Since 2002, Schloss Tharandt has been privately owned. Renovations are ongoing. The interior work is largely complete. However, there is still much to do on the exterior.
Consider the layers of history. From a defensive stronghold to a romantic residence, Schloss Tharandt stands as a testament to time’s passage and changing tastes. Its walls echo with tales of margraves, duchesses, and artists. Each contributed to the castle’s unique story.
