Envision a knight. It is 1147. He is returning to his Rittersitz, the Burg Bornheim.

Today we stand before Schloss Bornheim. This castle’s story stretches back centuries. It holds secrets of knights, barons and a devastating fire.

The Burg Bornheim was first mentioned in 1147. This marked its importance as a knight’s seat. Between 1728 and 1732, the Schloss Bornheim that we see today emerged. Johann Conrad Schlaun likely designed it. It mirrors the Maison de Plaisance style, popular in the Bonn area.

Only the outer ward remains from the older structure. The defensive gate tower with a drawbridge was replaced. A baroque entrance arch with a stone bridge and small bell tower took its place. Sadly, the bell tower was lost in a major fire on February 4, 1972.

The 19th century brought many owners. Gerhard Freiherr von Carnap acquired it in 1826. Wenzel Graf von Boos-Waldeck followed in 1859. Heinrich Freiherr von Diergardt became the owner in 1872.

Around 1900, the park surrounding Schloss Bornheim was transformed. It became an English landscape park. It features old native and imported trees and shrubs. A striking chestnut avenue leads to the Schloss Bornheim. A diverse birdlife thrives here. A wall surrounds the property. It is not open to the public because the Schloss Bornheim is privately owned.

From 1980 to June 30, 2018, the Schloss Bornheim housed a specialized clinic. It focused on medical rehabilitation. Opposite the Schloss Bornheim stands the former courthouse. Freiherr Waldbott von Bassenheim had it built in 1740.

Schloss Bornheim stands as a testament to time. It blends medieval origins with baroque elegance. Though privately owned, its exterior tells a rich story. A story of transformation, loss, and enduring beauty. Take a moment to appreciate the layers of history. Imagine the lives that have unfolded within these walls.
