Across the rushing waters of the Großhadern Stream stands the Schinderbrücke. It’s a modern bridge, built in 1978. But its name echoes a much older, darker tale. Schinderbrücke translates to “knacker’s bridge”. This name refers to the knacker, or Schinder, who once lived nearby. These individuals made their living from the less savory aspects of animal husbandry. They dealt with leather production, butchery waste, and animal carcasses. The Schinderbrücke stands as a reminder of their presence. It connects the present to a past. This past isn’t glamorous, but it’s a vital part of Munich’s history. The bridge itself is a simple, functional structure made of prestressed concrete beams. It carries pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles over the Großhadern Stream. This stream is a continuation of the Isar-Werkkanal. It flows beneath the Isarwerk II power plant, near the Flauchersteg footbridge. While the Schinderbrücke itself is unremarkable in its appearance, its name evokes the gritty reality of pre-industrial Munich. The location, near the execution grounds at Hackerbrücke, adds another layer of historical intrigue. The condemned were marched from the Marienplatz, after being held in the old town hall’s cellar, to the gallows on Galgenberg, near the present-day Hackerbrücke. The somber history of the area is palpable. Even today, the Augustiner-Biergarten on Arnulfstraße plays little music. This is out of respect for the many who were executed there. Their remains are believed to be buried in the ground. So, as you cross the Schinderbrücke, take a moment to reflect on the layers of history beneath your feet. From the mundane yet essential work of the knacker to the somber echoes of executions, the Schinderbrücke stands as a silent witness to Munich’s multifaceted past.
