Did you know that here at Leipzig Zoo, you can observe chimpanzees up close? We are at the Schimpansen viewpoint. This is Pongoland. Pongoland is home to our closest relatives. Here you can see them playing. Watch them climbing. Notice them foraging.

Pongoland opened in 2001. It is a modern ape world. It has spacious outdoor facilities. Four species of primates live here in family groups. These primates include gorillas. They also include orangutans. Bonobos are here too. Of course, you’ll also find the chimpanzees.

The Wolfgang Köhler Primate Research Center is in Pongoland. It studies the behavior and cognition of great apes. The research center works with Leipzig Zoo. Zoo visitors can observe the primates in their enclosures. You can also see them in the study rooms.

Currently, 28 chimpanzees live here. There are also 12 bonobos. Seven orangutans also live here. Plus, there are six gorillas. They live in five indoor and five outdoor enclosures. There are also research and sleeping quarters.
