Gaze upon the Schillerdenkmal. This bronze figure isn’t just a statue. It’s a testament to Mainz’s rich history and its connection to a literary giant.

The Schillerdenkmal commemorates Friedrich Schiller. He was a renowned German poet and playwright. The monument’s creation stemmed from celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of Schiller’s birth. Mainz residents felt a strong connection to him. Schiller had briefly stayed in Mainz in 1782. He even attempted to secure a position here later. He hoped Karl Theodor von Dalberg would help. Dalberg was the Stadtholder of the Mainz Elector in Erfurt. The Mainzer Republic ended those prospects however. Schiller remained politically skeptical of the Republic.

The Schillerdenkmal wasn’t always here. Initially it stood at the opposite end of Schillerplatz. It found its current home in 1929. Johann Baptist Scholl the Younger designed it. This Darmstädter court sculptor created the bronze figure. The casting happened in Nuremberg at the Burgschmied and Lanz foundry. The pedestal? A Mainz craftsman Roßbach and Lauer created that. The statue’s arrival in Mainz was quite an event. The Hessian Ludwigs Railway transported it free of charge.

Its unveiling was a three-day extravaganza in 1862. The city was adorned with flags and flowers. Shops sold Schiller-related merchandise. A special “Schiller-Stern” commemorative plaque was even issued. The grand procession wound through the city to Schillerplatz.

The Denkmal itself is a masterpiece of classicism. The larger-than-life bronze figure stands proudly. Its pedestal is crafted from Belgian marble. Bronze plates further adorn the intricately decorated base. Schiller’s pose is purposeful. It conveys a forward-striving spirit. The book in his hand symbolizes his literary legacy.

Today the Schillerdenkmal remains a focal point. It sits in one of Mainz’s busiest squares. It’s surrounded by baroque and rococo palaces. It’s a quiet reminder of a fascinating past. Benches invite visitors to rest and contemplate the lasting impact of this great poet. The Schillerdenkmal continues to connect Mainz to its literary and historical heritage.
