How did a small village become a Bremerhaven suburb? Welcome to Schiffdorferdamm. This quiet residential area boasts a surprisingly rich history. Once a part of the municipality of Schiffdorf it was first documented in 1139. The first settlers arrived around 1780. However the area really grew in the late 19th century. Cheap building land attracted many new residents. Schiffdorferdamm became a predominantly working-class suburb unlike its more rural neighbor Schiffdorf.

By 1927 Schiffdorferdamm had about 1000 inhabitants. It was then separated from Schiffdorf and incorporated into Wesermünde. Over two-thirds of the area consisted of meadows and fields. After 1947 Schiffdorferdamm officially became a part of Bremerhaven. A fascinating detail many people overlook is that from December 1947 to June 1958 trolleybuses even ran to Schiffdorferdamm. The final stop was in the Lower Saxony community of Schiffdorf. A special hall was built in 1949 on the north side of Schiffdorfer Chaussee to house these trolleybuses.

Schiffdorferdamm continued to evolve. In 1971 a redistricting officially made it a neighborhood. The construction of the Reinkenheide Central Hospital around 1972 significantly impacted the area’s development. Today this hospital is known as the Klinikum Bremerhaven employing around 1700 people and offering 700 beds. The area has grown but retained a sense of community. Today Schiffdorferdamm is home to a kindergarten a primary school and several sports and community clubs like the SC Schiffdorferdamm. Its convenient location near the A27 motorway provides easy access to Cuxhaven and Bremen. It also maintains its quiet charm a peaceful respite from the bustling city center. Yet it remains easily accessible.
