Welcome to Sawmill Creek Bluff Overlook. This scenic spot is known for its natural beauty. It is a key feature of Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve.

Waterfall Glen covers 2,503 acres. It features prairies, savannas, and oak-maple woodlands. These diverse habitats support an incredible range of plant and animal life. In fact, there are 740 native plant species here. That is 75 percent of all plants known to grow naturally in DuPage County.

The abundance of plant life supports over 300 species of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Another 300 species of invertebrates also call this place home. Some stay year-round. Others visit during their migrations.

Sawmill Creek itself adds to the area’s charm. Boulders and leaves fill the creek creating striking natural scenes. If you trace the creek you might lose the trail under leaves. But do not worry. You will find it again.

From Sawmill Creek Bluff Overlook, you can see the handiwork of nature. You can hike up and down bluffs. There is rocky terrain here to best enjoy the preserve. Take in the spectacular views. Fall is a great time for views. You can see elements previously hidden by leaves.

The area has a rich history. Long ago, Native Americans lived along the limestone bluffs. Signal Hill served as a communications vantage point. Later, in the late 1800s, the Ward Brothers built a mill on Sawmill Creek. They turned out lumber. Edwin Walker’s quarries yielded limestone for projects like the Chicago Avenue Water Tower.

In 1925, the Forest Preserve District acquired its first 75 acres. This included Signal Hill and Rocky Glen. The Civilian Conservation Corps improved Rocky Glen in the 1930s.

The Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve got its name in 1973. It was named after Seymour Bud Waterfall. He was an early president of the District’s Board of Commissioners.

Waterfall Glen’s Bluff Savanna is a conservation area. It has 422 native plant species. These include one state-threatened species. It also has 36 of special concern. Black and white oaks, hickories, and black walnuts are some of the oldest trees in the county. Some are between 180 and 215 years old.

As you stand here at Sawmill Creek Bluff Overlook, think about the past. Consider the Native Americans, the mill workers, and the conservationists. They all played a role in shaping this land.

Take a moment to appreciate the view. Notice the colors, the textures, and the sounds of nature. This overlook offers a unique perspective on Waterfall Glen’s beauty and history.
