Slipping through time, imagine ourselves in 1945. The air crackles with tension. We’re on the edge of Sawangan, near the border of Kukusan. Here, amidst the Gedoran Depok, a young warrior named Margonda fought bravely against Dutch forces. Sawangan, a district in Depok City, West Java, Indonesia, bears the scars of this historical struggle. Sawangan, today a bustling area of over 26 square kilometers, was once a battleground. Margonda, a trainee pilot during the Dutch East Indies era, joined the People’s Security Agency after Indonesia’s independence. He fought valiantly in the Battle of Gedoran Depok. Tragically, a Dutch bullet struck him as he prepared to throw a grenade. The resulting explosion ended his life. Sawangan remembers Margonda. His name echoes through the city, immortalized in the main road connecting Depok to Jakarta. While Sawangan has grown, its population nearing 200,000 in mid-2023, the memory of Margonda’s sacrifice remains. He is a reminder of Sawangan’s turbulent past and its enduring spirit. His story, a poignant echo in the heart of Sawangan, is a testament to the struggle for independence.
