Behold Imperia. A giant woman holding two men aloft. She stands defiantly at the harbor’s edge a testament to Konstanz’s rich and sometimes scandalous past.

Imperia is more than just a statue. She is a rotating symbol of the Council of Constance. This council from 1414 to 1418 aimed to end the Western Schism. Three rival popes claimed authority. Imperia is a satirical commentary on that tumultuous time.

The artist Peter Lenk deliberately avoided representing Pope Martin V and Emperor Sigismund directly. He instead portrayed them as fools. They wear the papal tiara and imperial crown. Yet Lenk insists they are not the actual historical figures. He playfully challenges us to consider the folly of power.

Imperia’s inspiration comes from Balzac’s story La Belle Imperia. This tale depicts a powerful courtesan who manipulated cardinals and princes. However Lenk’s Imperia is a different beast. She is a fictional character based on Balzac’s creation. The real Imperia was an Italian courtesan who died long after the Council of Constance.

This 9-meter-tall concrete statue weighs 18 tons. She rotates slowly. Once every four minutes. This constant movement adds to her enigmatic aura. Her installation caused a stir. It stood on private property and nobody objected to its location. Now Imperia is a beloved landmark. She attracts tourists from around the world. People come to see her unique style and intriguing story.

Consider Imperia’s location. She stands at the entrance of the harbor. She guards the waters and welcomes visitors. Her presence is as grand as Konstanz’s history.

Imperia is more than just a statue. She is a conversation starter. She is a symbol of power. She is a reminder of history’s follies. She is a true icon of Konstanz. She is a must-see for any visitor to this charming German city.
