Perhaps you’ve glimpsed it from afar. That’s Sas szikla. It stands as a unique natural landmark. Sas szikla offers a fascinating story.

Sas szikla’s name means Eagle Hill. It is derived from the German name Adlerberg. Legend says that after Buda’s liberation from Ottoman rule in 1686, eagles were released from here toward Buda Castle. This symbolized victory.

Before being called Sas szikla, it was known as Királyhegy. That means King’s Hill. Hungarian kings often rested here during hunting trips.

Once, Sas szikla was covered in vineyards. These vineyards were cultivated mainly by the city’s Serbian population. They brought the Kadarka grape variety. However, the phylloxera blight destroyed the vineyards. The Buda hills never regained their wine-making fame.

Today, the Sas-hegy Nature Reserve protects the area. It spans 30 acres. It was established in 1958. It is one of Hungary’s first nature reserves. The reserve protects the limestone landscape and its unique plant and animal life.

The summit of Sas szikla reaches 266 meters. This height offers scenic views. You can see Buda Castle and Gellért Hill. The districts of Buda also come into view.

The Sas-hegy Nature Reserve belongs to the Danube-Ipoly National Park. A visitor center welcomes you. A 2350-meter-long circular trail explores the reserve’s natural features.

Sas szikla is home to unique flora. The bunny’s tail grass is exactly that, a grass. The horse’s tail is a tiny plant.

The Pannonian lizard may have been first classified on Sas szikla. Botanist Pál Kitaibel identified it.

Interestingly, efforts are ongoing to reduce non-native plant species. This allows indigenous plants to flourish.

The dolomite rock makes up the soil. It can easily become dislodged. The Bear Rock offers a toilet spot for foxes.

Today, the Sas szikla stands as a testament to Budapest’s natural history. The park is a reminder of the city’s past. It is a place for locals and visitors to connect with nature. It is located near the heart of the city. Sas szikla awaits your discovery.
