“Pure Hollywood Tudor.” That’s how architectural historian Nicholas Pevsner described Sarum Chase. You can see why, can’t you? Right here before you at 23 West Heath Road is Sarum Chase. It’s a truly impressive neo-Tudor mansion. Sarum Chase was built in 1932. It served as both the home and studio of the renowned portrait artist, Frank O. Salisbury. The name “Sarum” actually comes from the old name for Salisbury, the town. The architect behind this magnificent building was Vyvyan Salisbury, Frank’s own nephew. Interestingly, Frank documented the entire building process in his autobiography, aptly titled “Sarum Chase.” He talks about his vision for the house, nestled in this prime location on Hampstead Heath. He was captivated by the “primeval site,” as he called it, with its breathtaking views and those majestic oak trees. He wanted to create something truly special, a house that would do justice to such a remarkable setting. In 1962, after Salisbury’s death, the house had a rather surprising turn. It became a temporary home for St Vedast’s School for Boys. But Sarum Chase’s story doesn’t end there. The house has a certain cinematic allure. It even graced the silver screen. Remember Cruella De Vil’s imposing mansion in the live-action “101 Dalmatians”? That was Sarum Chase you saw. And it wasn’t just Disney. The Rolling Stones chose this very spot for a photoshoot for their iconic “Beggars Banquet” album back in 1968. Today, Sarum Chase stands as a testament to a fascinating past, a blend of artistic legacy and a touch of Hollywood glamour.
