Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Here before us stands the Sarlós Boldogasszony templom a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Újlak.

This isn’t just any church. It’s a living breathing story etched into its very stones. Its history stretches back centuries to a time when two settlements Felhévíz and Szentjakabfalva thrived where it now stands. Tragedy struck during the Turkish occupation both settlements and their churches were destroyed.

But from the ashes rose a new community. Bavarian and Württemberg settlers established Újlak a suburb of Buda. By 1702 150 houses stood testament to their perseverance. A small church was built and in 1705 a Franciscan priest celebrated the first mass marking the rebirth of the parish.

The church you see today however is a later creation. Between 1745 and 1750 it was built by architects Hamon Kristóf and Nepauer Máté. It’s a substantial structure covering 540 square meters. The original tower proved unsafe and had to be demolished. A new one was added in 1765.

In 1774 a remarkable addition arrived an Innsbruck Madonna a copy of a Lucas Cranach painting. Then in 1779 with the completion of an altarpiece depicting the Visitation the church’s title was changed from Our Lady of Help to Sarlós Boldogasszony. Archbishop Sándor Rudnay solemnly consecrated the church in 1825.

The Sarlós Boldogasszony templom has faced its share of hardship. A devastating storm in 1875 damaged it severely. Renovations in 1877 gave it the form we see today. Further restorations were carried out between 1957 and 1960 and again in 1997. The interior is beautiful thanks to generous donations from parishioners.

For years a touching tradition has continued. On the church’s feast day July 2 expectant mothers make a pilgrimage to Sarlós Boldogasszony templom seeking blessings.

This building is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of community faith and survival. It stands as a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity hope can bloom and traditions endure. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty and the rich history held within these walls. The Sarlós Boldogasszony templom is indeed a treasure of Budapest.
