Tucked away in the heart of Budapest, the Sarlós Boldogasszony-kápolna whispers tales of resilience and faith. The Sarlós Boldogasszony-kápolna stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Újlak. Let’s step back to 1705. Jánoschitz Mátyás, a treasury courier, and his wife gifted a plot of land, complete with a house, for the construction of a modest chapel. This humble beginning marked the first step in the Sarlós Boldogasszony-kápolna’s journey. The year 1705, etched above the entrance, commemorates this act of devotion. The inscription “Creaturi Creatura” translates to “Creature to Creator”, a testament to their piety. The house was transformed, and on November 30, 1706, the first chapel was blessed. The Sarlós Boldogasszony-kápolna wasn’t always as you see it today. Between 1746 and 1759, the current structure was built, designed by Hamon Kritóf and Nepauer Máté. A central tower graced its facade, but sadly, it began to sink and lean. Eventually, it had to be dismantled. The present-day side tower was erected in 1765, giving the Sarlós Boldogasszony-kápolna its distinctive profile. Disaster struck in 1793 when lightning ignited a fire. The tower’s spire was consumed, the bells were destroyed, and the church itself suffered damage. Years later, in 1875, a catastrophic downpour caused a landslide. The rushing waters surged into the crypt and then into the church, carrying coffins and sacred objects out into the streets. This devastation, however, paved the way for a much-needed restoration. In 1877, the city of Budapest funded the church’s revival. The tower received its current spire, designed by Ybl Miklós. The main facade was also restored, gaining its elegant obelisk-adorned gable. Inside the Sarlós Boldogasszony-kápolna, a captivating artwork awaits. A copy of Lucas Cranach’s renowned painting of the Virgin Mary graces the sanctuary, a gift from an unknown devotee in 1774. It hangs above the tabernacle, a beautiful piece from 1761. The high altar, a masterpiece crafted in the image of Mariazell’s shrine, holds a special significance. In 1799, a local, József Stuck, celebrated his first mass here. From that point forward, the church officially adopted the name Sarlós Boldogasszony, meaning “Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.” Its feast day falls on July 2nd. The interior of the Sarlós Boldogasszony-kápolna boasts vibrant frescoes. Painted by Dezső Raksányi in 1925, they depict key scenes: Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, the Sorrowful Mother, Mary’s song of praise “Magnificat,” and Our Lady of Hungary on a triumphal arch. These colorful additions breathe life into the church’s narrative. The Sarlós Boldogasszony-kápolna continues to be a place of pilgrimage, especially for expectant mothers who revive an age-old tradition on the feast day. Its story, interwoven with resilience, destruction, and renewal, offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Budapest’s spiritual heritage.
