“Sarıgöl isn’t for you girls it’s dangerous” a man warned us in a Gaziosmanpaşa cafe. Sarıgöl Mahallesi a neighborhood within Gaziosmanpaşa is known for its complex history and reputation. It’s a place where different cultures Kurdish Roma Arab live side by side. This blend creates a unique atmosphere but also a history of conflict.

Sarıgöl’s reputation isn’t entirely positive. Some describe it as a shanty town. Illegal activities including drug production and dealing were said to be common. This unfortunately contributed to the negative perception many Istanbul residents hold. The area also became known for its involvement in the Apaçi subculture a youth movement that emerged from the suburbs. They dance recklessly and wear a distinctive style. The Apaçi phenomenon sparked a debate about social class and prejudices within Turkey.

The Turkish government has had its eye on Sarıgöl. It’s been included in urban transformation projects. The government’s aim is to eliminate poverty in Istanbul a city it views as a valuable brand. This urban renewal however carries risks for Sarıgöl’s residents. Many fear displacement and the loss of their homes. The government’s approach isn’t universally welcomed some feel it’s a way to seize poor people’s land.

Our exploration of Sarıgöl Mahallesi took us through steep narrow streets. We saw small houses gecekondu built without permits. Many are decades old and in need of repair. Roma women dressed in colorful clothes walked the streets. Their gaze wasn’t suspicious or hostile instead we were greeted with curiosity and friendliness.

We spoke with some Roma women. They had heard rumors that the city planned to demolish homes. They were worried. The offered compensation 50 billion YTL or 2500 Euros was considered insulting. They were not organized politically. They were struggling against a powerful entity the Istanbul municipality. Their homes their community their livelihoods were on the line. Some described the lower part of Sarıgöl as more dangerous than their area citing drug dealing as a significant concern.

The story of Sarıgöl Mahallesi is one of complexity. It’s a neighborhood marked by its multiculturalism its challenges and its struggle for survival amidst urban development. Its future remains uncertain a testament to the ongoing tensions between urban renewal and the preservation of community and culture. The residents’ resilience in the face of these challenges is truly remarkable. They stand their ground fighting for their homes and their heritage. This is the Sarıgöl Mahallesi a place you won’t soon forget.
