Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was a leading figure in the Indian independence movement. He later became India’s first Deputy Prime Minister. English Heritage erected the Sardar Patel Blue plaque in 1991. However, the story of this plaque begins earlier.
Patel came to England in 1910 to train as a barrister. He was 36 years old. He had saved for many years to make this trip possible. Patel stayed at number 23 Aldridge Road Villas. Back then, it was a moderately priced boarding house. From here, he walked four miles daily to the Middle Temple.
Patel fully dedicated himself to his studies. He won several prizes. He completed his course of study early. In 1912, he returned to India to practise as a barrister.
Patel became a convert to the cause of Indian independence. He became Gandhi’s chief lieutenant. Like Gandhi, he spent long periods in prison for civil disobedience. Patel played a crucial role in the negotiations leading to India’s independence in 1947.
He later served as Minister for Home Affairs. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister under Jawaharlal Nehru. Patel was known for his tough pragmatic leadership. He was also known for his organizing skills. By the time of his death, people widely addressed Patel as ‘Sardar’. This means ‘chief’.
The Greater London Council first erected Patel’s plaque in 1986. Building work later damaged it. English Heritage replaced it with an exact replica in 1991. The Sardar Patel Blue plaque serves as a reminder. It reminds us of Patel’s time in London. It also reminds us of his significant contributions to India.
There have been demands to purchase the houses where Sardar Patel stayed. One house is in Delhi and the other is here in London’s Ladbroke Grove. This shows how important his residences are considered.
