Did Atatürk ever imagine his likeness cast in bronze, overlooking the Bosphorus? Here at the Sarayburnu Atatürk Monument, we stand before the first statue of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk erected in Turkey. This historic monument, nestled in Sarayburnu Park, isn’t just a statue. It’s a symbol of a nation’s transformation. The Sarayburnu Atatürk Monument, commissioned by Istanbul’s mayor, Emin Bey, and crafted by Austrian sculptor Heinrich Krippel, was unveiled on October 3, 1926. Krippel, who spent thirteen years in Turkey, created numerous Atatürk sculptures. This one, however, holds a special significance as the first. Cast in Vienna and transported in pieces, the statue depicts Atatürk not in military attire, but in a civilian suit. This was a deliberate choice, portraying him as a statesman, a symbol of the new Republic. The Sarayburnu Atatürk Monument captures Atatürk in a dynamic pose. His right hand rests on his waist, his left hand clenched in a fist. His brow is furrowed, his eyes narrowed with a look of determination. The statue stands atop a marble pedestal, originally adorned with bronze medallions bearing inscriptions. While these medallions are no longer present, the statue itself continues to inspire awe. This location, Sarayburnu, is also where Atatürk embarked on his journey to Samsun in 1919, a pivotal moment in the Turkish War of Independence.
