This unassuming stone, the Sapper Adam Archibald Stone, marks a place of quiet remembrance. The Sapper Adam Archibald Stone commemorates the extraordinary bravery of a Scottish soldier, Sapper Adam Archibald. Archibald, born in Leith, Edinburgh in 1879, served in the First World War. He was a Sapper in the 218th Field Company, Royal Engineers. On November 4th, 1918, near Ors, France, he found himself in a perilous situation. Archibald was part of a team tasked with building a floating bridge across the Sambre-Oise Canal under heavy enemy fire. Despite the relentless barrage of artillery and machine-gun fire, Archibald displayed unwavering courage. He continued to work on the bridge’s cork floats, even with enemy soldiers just yards away. His determination and leadership inspired his comrades. They managed to complete the bridge quickly, which was crucial for the operation’s success. However, tragedy struck shortly after. Archibald collapsed, severely affected by gas poisoning. For his extraordinary bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military honor for gallantry. King George V himself presented him with the medal at Buckingham Palace in May 1919. The Sapper Adam Archibald Stone stands as a testament to his courage, sacrifice, and the enduring impact of war on individuals.
