High atop Cerrito de la Victoria, a beacon of faith shines. The Santuario Nacional del Corazón de Jesús commands attention. Its majestic presence graces the Montevideo skyline. The Santuario Nacional del Corazón de Jesús isn’t just a church. It’s a symbol, a story etched in stone and brick. The story begins in 1889. The First Uruguayan Catholic Assembly envisioned a sanctuary dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This sanctuary would stand atop the historic Cerrito de la Victoria. Years passed, marked by land purchases, sales, and the tension between Church and State. Finally, in 1919, Father Antonio D’Elia spearheaded the purchase of land. On November 23rd, 1919, a pivotal moment arrived. The cornerstone of the Santuario Nacional del Corazón de Jesús was laid. Uruguay was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The design, inspired by the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris and the Hagia Sophia, took shape under the guidance of architects Elzeario Boix and Horacio Terra Arocena. These architects also left their mark on other iconic structures like the Basilica de la Aguada and the Flores Cathedral. The Santuario Nacional del Corazón de Jesús opened its doors in 1928. The Sacramentine Fathers, who had arrived from Buenos Aires, oversaw the sanctuary for 75 years. The church’s distinct Neo-Byzantine style, with its grand central dome and Greek cross layout, echoes the architectural marvels of the past. Four angular towers rise around the central dome, reaching towards the heavens. Atop the Santuario Nacional del Corazón de Jesús stands a six-meter-tall statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This 12,000-kilogram statue, a gift from the Garcia Lagos family, made a three-day journey by cart from the port to its current home. The Santuario Nacional del Corazón de Jesús became a National Historic Monument in 1975. Today, the Santuario Nacional del Corazón de Jesús serves as both a parish church and a national shrine. It draws visitors from near and far, offering a place of worship, architectural wonder, and historical significance. This sanctuary is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents the enduring power of faith, a testament to the vision of those who sought to create a beacon of hope atop Cerrito de la Victoria.
