“A sanctuary built on a hill of dreams.” That’s how I like to describe the Santuario de San Jose. We’re standing before a testament to faith and perseverance, right here in East Greenhills, Mandaluyong. The Santuario de San Jose isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a story etched in steel and cement, stained glass and prayer. In the 1960s, the Ortigas Company gifted a plot of hilly land to the Archdiocese of Manila. Their vision? A church to serve the growing community. Father Guido Coletti, an Oblate of St. Joseph, took on the monumental task. Initially, fundraising was slow, a test of faith in itself. Imagine Father Coletti travelling all the way from Batangas, seeking support. Yet, by March 1964, he had miraculously gathered enough funds to begin construction. The church we see today, with its modern design by architect Manuel Mañosa, Jr. and structural expertise of Nemesio Montenegro, arose from that initial act of faith. It took 25 months to complete. The Santuario de San Jose was consecrated on April 2, 1966. The first masses, including the cherished Misa de Gallo, were actually held within the unfinished structure. A testament to the community’s eagerness to worship. In 1967, it officially became a parish, initially serving around 3,500 people from nearby areas like Wack-Wack, White Plains, and Camp Crame. The Santuario de San Jose has become a beloved place for weddings and baptisms. Today, its congregation has grown to over 100,000. The church’s growth reflects the community’s devotion and the tireless efforts of its leaders, like Father Guido, who became the first parish priest. The Santuario de San Jose, dedicated to St. Joseph the Patriarch, also honors St. Joseph Marello, the founder of the Oblates of St. Joseph, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Look at the details, the stained glass casting colorful patterns, the wooden accents, the simple elegance that speaks volumes. This isn’t just a church; it’s a sanctuary built on a hill of dreams, a testament to faith, perseverance, and the power of community.
