“Devotion in architecture” could describe the Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Fátima. This sanctuary stands as a testament to faith in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. Today, we explore its history and significance.
The story begins with Padre Angelo Di Paoli. In 1934, São Luís Orione entrusted him with a mission. That mission was to build a sanctuary dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Fátima. Padre Angelo embraced this task with unwavering dedication.
His first step was practical. In May 1935, he created a book to record donations. He faced financial struggles and challenges in finding the right location. Yet, his faith remained unshaken.
With support from Dom Sebastião Leme and the Bishop of Leiria, Padre Angelo persevered. He even sought prayers from Lúcia de Fátima, one of the visionaries. Finally, in 1938, he acquired the land. By the following year, 1939, the first chapel was erected.
On October 13, 1939, a significant event took place. Padre Angelo Di Paoli celebrated the first Mass in the provisional chapel. It was a moment of joy and emotion. Then, on December 10, Dom Beni Aloísio Mazela blessed the image of Nossa Senhora de Fátima.
The Confraria de Nossa Senhora de Fátima was established the next month. On June 16, 1940, the cornerstone was laid. Cardinal Dom Sebastião Leme led the liturgical ceremony. The Portuguese Ambassador, Dr. Martinho Nobre de Melo, and many others attended. In October 1940, the “Fátima Brasileira” bulletin began publication.
The construction of the Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Fátima progressed. Finally, on May 3, 1947, the church was inaugurated. Dom Jaime de Barros Câmara, the Cardinal Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, officiated.
Over the years, the Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Fátima has adapted to modern times. It continues to serve the spiritual needs of its devotees.
The Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Fátima became a matriz church on September 9, 1960. It officially became the Paróquia de Nossa Senhora de Fátima do Centro do Rio de Janeiro.
Today, the Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Fátima stands as a symbol of faith. Its history is a testament to the dedication of Padre Angelo Di Paoli and the devotion of its community. Remember the humble beginnings and the unwavering spirit that built this sanctuary. It is a place where faith and history intertwine.
