Was it a venerable sage who first gazed upon this very spot? We stand before Santo Tomás Tlamatzingo a neighborhood steeped in history. Its name Tlamatzinco means place of the venerable sage a nod to the ancient god Tlamantzica an aspect of Tezcatlipoca. Imagine a shrine perhaps standing here centuries ago before the Dominicans arrived in the mid-16th century. This area was one of the twenty-five original settlements in Azcapotzalco a testament to its deep roots.

During the colonial period Santo Tomás Tlamatzingo served primarily as ranchland. Livestock grazed peacefully where now buildings stand. Details of its early construction are scarce. However the chapel you see today likely dates back to the 16th century founded by those same Dominicans.

Santo Tomás Tlamatzingo’s most dramatic chapter unfolded at the very end of the colonial period. Royalist forces defeated in the final battle of the Mexican War of Independence sought refuge here. They fled after the fighting at the Church of Felipe and Santiago. This small area offered a desperate haven.

The 20th century brought sweeping changes. Much of the eastern part of the neighborhood lies beneath warehouses and factories. Yet Santo Tomás Tlamatzingo endures. It’s a place where history and whimsy intertwine. Notice the crooked streets and the misshapen Plazuela Santo Tomás. These aren’t the hallmarks of a 20th-century development. They’re the echoes of a much older story.
