People gathered at a street corner for nine-day Novena masses. This continued for years.
After the 1977 fiesta a significant change occurred. A piece of land was secured at 144 M.H. del Pilar Street. This became the foundation of the church. Another lot was acquired at 11 Sanchez Street. It adjoined the first lot. A group worked tirelessly to raise funds for a chapel. Money was scarce. The chapel remained a simple plot of land without walls or a roof. There was just a table for the altar.
In 1986 a new group took up the challenge. They were determined to complete the chapel. They succeeded building the walls and a roof. Soon Sunday masses were held morning and evening. The Santo Cristo Chapel was finally realized through the dedication of churchgoers and friends.
A pivotal moment arrived in 1990. The late Jaime Cardinal Sin declared Sto Cristo de Bungad a parish. He appointed Fr Benedicto Santos as its first parish priest. The small chapel transformed into a vibrant parish serving its community.
