Have you ever wondered about Lisbon’s deep connection to Saint Anthony? Here at the Santo António de Lisboa Statue we celebrate that connection. This statue honors the city’s beloved patron saint. It stands just outside the Igreja de Santo António de Lisboa.

The Santo António de Lisboa Statue marks a significant historical and religious site. Tradition says Saint Anthony was born here in 1195. He was originally named Fernando de Bulhões.

Saint Anthony’s story is quite remarkable. Born into a wealthy Lisbon family, he later joined the Franciscan Order. He became known as Brother Anthony. His powerful sermons and teachings led him across Portugal and Italy. He died in Padua at only 36. Yet, his impact was so great that he was canonized less than a year later.

The statue we see today is not the first tribute to Saint Anthony. A small chapel was built on this site in the 15th century. King Manuel I rebuilt it in the early 16th century. However, the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed much of the church. Only the main chapel survived.

The church and its surroundings were rebuilt. The current Baroque-Rococo design dates back to 1767. Architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira led the reconstruction. Interestingly, even children contributed to the rebuilding efforts. They collected coins for Saint Anthony.

Pope John Paul II visited this sacred site on May 12, 1982. He dedicated the Santo António de Lisboa Statue. The sculptor Soares Branco created it. The Pope prayed in the crypt. This crypt is believed to be the exact spot of Saint Anthony’s birth.

Saint Anthony is not only Lisbon’s patron saint but also a matchmaker. Couples often visit the church on their wedding day. They seek his blessing for a happy marriage.

Each year on June 13, Lisbon celebrates Saint Anthony’s feast day. A grand procession begins at this church. It winds its way past the Lisbon Cathedral. Then it continues through the historic Alfama neighborhood. The festivities include music, dancing and traditional foods. Grilled sardines are a must-try.

The celebrations extend throughout June. The city comes alive with street parties and events. Alfama and Bica are especially vibrant. People gather to enjoy music, food and the lively atmosphere.

Another tradition involves marjoram. This aromatic plant is given as a gift to a loved one. The marjoram pot is often decorated with a small flag. A verse about love is written on it.

The Santo António de Lisboa Statue reminds us of the saint’s enduring legacy. It is a focal point for religious devotion and cultural celebration. It also reflects Lisbon’s rich history and traditions. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry and the deep faith it represents. And perhaps, whisper a little prayer to Saint Anthony. You never know what blessings might come your way.
