Ever wondered where the name of this neighborhood comes from? You are now standing in front of Santo Antonio de Água Santa. Its story is deeply intertwined with the area’s history.

In 1888, a freed slave named Domingos Camões made a remarkable discovery. He found a mineral spring. It was Rio de Janeiro’s second such find. Domingos Camões started bottling the water. He used old wine bottles. He then sold them door to door. People began calling the water “Água Santa” or Holy Water.

Gradually, the area itself became known as Água Santa. In 1914, the Águas Santa Cruz Ltd bottling company was founded. It helped cement the name and legacy of Água Santa. The company still exists today. It perpetuates the spring’s name.

Santo Antonio de Água Santa also hosts a significant annual event. Every June, the Feast of St. Anthony takes place here. It honors the neighborhood’s patron saint. The feast includes traditional Portuguese food. There is also a procession through the streets.

Água Santa has seen its share of challenges and changes. The neighborhood faced favelization. Yet, it maintains a strong sense of community.

Santo Antonio de Água Santa has a rich cultural history. The church provides regular services. Masses are held on Sundays at 9 am and 6 pm. There is also a mass on Saturdays at 5 pm.

Água Santa also has notable residents. Singers Alaíde Costa and Elza Soares once called it home. Elza Soares shared memories of her life. She did this in a 2006 interview.

Today, Água Santa is a predominantly residential neighborhood. It is located in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone. It borders several other neighborhoods. These include Jacarepaguá, Piedade, and Encantado. Água Santa is also partly defined by the Serra dos Pretos-Forros ridge.

Água Santa is more than just a place on the map. It is a place with a story. A story of discovery, faith, and community. As you leave Santo Antonio de Água Santa reflect on the holy water. Remember the freed slave, Domingos Camões. Think about the vibrant feast. Consider the spirit of Água Santa. It is a spirit that continues to flow through this neighborhood.
