Did you ever hear of a church dedicated to two saints? Here at the Santa Teresa Church in Pasay, that’s precisely the case. Santa Teresa Church is a fascinating blend of history, faith, and architectural marvel. It stands as a testament to resilience and transformation. The church wasn’t always known as Santa Teresa Church. It began its life in 1947 as a humble makeshift chapel within Nichols Air Base, dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. It was a spiritual haven for the Philippine Air Force personnel stationed there. Over the years, the chapel underwent several expansions and reconstructions to accommodate the growing number of servicemen seeking solace within its walls. Then, in the 1980s, a major reconstruction transformed the chapel. This pivotal moment marked its rededication to St. Therese of the Child Jesus. In 1983, Archbishop Bruno Torpigliani, the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, consecrated the newly transformed Santa Teresa Church. The year 2000 brought a significant event to Santa Teresa Church: the arrival of the pilgrim relics of St. Therese. This visit further solidified the church’s connection to the “Millennium Saint” and inspired another wave of renovations. Archbishop Ramon C. Arguelles spearheaded this project to enhance the church’s spiritual atmosphere and promote devotion to St. Therese among the servicemen. The church’s location, near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, makes it a unique landmark for travelers and locals alike. Its eye-catching architectural design, with its blend of classical and contemporary elements, sets it apart from other churches in Manila. Even its history shows a unique story. The original building was meant to serve the spiritual needs of the air force. It stands as a symbol of peace and hope amidst the bustling activity of the airport. The church’s story is one of adaptation, reflecting the changing times while staying true to its core purpose. It is a place where the past and present intertwine, offering a sanctuary for reflection and prayer.
