Deep within the heart of Ecatepec de Morelos lies Santa Maria Chiconautla Cementerio. It’s a place of quiet remembrance, nestled within a city teeming with life. Santa Maria Chiconautla Cementerio isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a reflection of the rich tapestry of life and death in this vibrant Mexican city. The name “Chiconautla” itself whispers tales of the past. It comes from the Nahuatl word “chiconahui,” meaning “nine,” and “tlan,” meaning “between” or “in the middle of.” So, Chiconautla translates to “place of the nine.” This resonates with the history of the area. Santa Maria Chiconautla Cementerio is also connected to a historical conflict between Santa María Chiconautla and Santo Tomás Chiconautla. During the 20th century, Santo Tomás tried to claim part of Santa María’s territory. This led to a tragic clash where nine people from Santo Tomás and three from Santa María lost their lives. Among the fallen was Valentín Flores Rojas, an ejidatario (landowner) from Santa María. Today, a street named “Valentín Flores” honors his memory. Every year on December 15th, both communities commemorate those lost in this conflict. They hold celebrations to remember the fallen and strive for peace. Santa Maria Chiconautla Cementerio serves as a poignant reminder of this shared history. It is a place where the community gathers not only to mourn but also to celebrate the lives of those who came before.
