Alonso Rodríguez wasn’t born here in Palma. He came from Segovia Spain. Born in 1531 Alonso experienced life’s highs and lows. He married and had children. Tragedy struck when he lost his wife and children. This loss transformed him.
He sought solace in faith. Alonso wanted to join the Jesuits. But his lack of education was a problem. He was eventually accepted as a lay brother. In 1571 at the age of 40, a new chapter began for Alonso.
He was sent to Palma de Mallorca. Here at the Colegio Nuestra Señora de Montesión his role was humble. He became the doorkeeper. For 46 years Sant Alonso Rodríguez welcomed all. His simple act of opening the door became his ministry.
Imagine Alonso at the gate. The bell rings. He sees not just a visitor but Christ himself. He offers guidance to the troubled. He gives alms to the needy. Word of his wisdom spread throughout Palma. Even Saint Peter Claver sought his advice here.

Even after his death recognition grew. He was declared venerable in 1626. Pope Clement XIII recognized his heroic virtues in 1760. Later he was beatified by Leo XII in 1825. Finally he was canonized by Leo XIII in 1888.
