Ever wonder what it is like to stand on ground that has seen centuries of history unfold? Here at Sans Souci in Castries you’re standing on such a place. Sans Souci means “without worries” in French. This area whispers tales of battles. It also echoes with the dreams of those who sought freedom.

Castries is the capital city of Saint Lucia. It was initially called Carenage. The name changed in 1785. It then honored Charles Eugène Gabriel de La Croix. He was the Marquis de Castries. He lived from 1727 to 1801. He served as the French Minister of the Navy and Colonies.

Castries stands as Saint Lucia’s commercial heart. Its sea port bustles with activity. It houses nearly a third of the island’s population. The city is a blend of French and British architectural styles. Street names like Jeremie Street and William Peter Boulevard reflect this history.

The Castries Harbour is a deep-water marvel. It was originally a volcanic crater. The harbor became known during World War II. German submarines attacked two ships there in 1942. Many lives were lost. Today, cargo ships and cruise liners fill its waters.

The Great Fire of Castries changed the city forever. It happened on the evening of June 19, 1948. The fire destroyed 40 blocks of homes and businesses. Over 800 families lost everything.

A live coal iron caused the fire. It was left unattended in a tailor’s shop. The flames quickly spread. Around 80% of the city turned to ashes. A firefighting squad from the United States Air Force Base in Vieux Fort finally put out the fire.

The fire led to two significant events. First, Derek Walcott wrote a poem about the tragedy. It was called “A City’s Death by Fire”. This marked the start of his great literary career. Second, class divisions faded. This paved the way for modern infrastructure.

In Castries visit Derek Walcott Square. It sits in the heart of the city. It was once Place d’Armes and Promenade Square. It then became Columbus Square in 1892. In 1993, it was renamed after Nobel Laureate Sir Derek Walcott. You’ll find bronze busts of Sir Derek Walcott and Sir William Arthur Lewis in the Square.

The Carnegie Library is nearby. So is the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. It features murals by Sir Dunstan St. Omer. You can also visit Constitution Park and George V Park. The Castries Central Market is another highlight.

Other notable sites include the Saint Lucia Parliament Building. Also the Government Buildings and Blue Coral Mall. Don’t miss the General Post Office and La Place Carenage. Duty Free Pointe Seraphine and William George Mallet Serenity Park are great too. The George F.L. Charles Airport is also within the city.

Banks, supermarkets, restaurants and bars are all here. Clothing stores and street vendors offer unique finds. Minibus and taxi drivers help you explore. All these contribute to a memorable visit to Castries.

For a great view of the city, go to Morne Fortune. From there, see Saint Lucian architecture and beauty. The island’s topography unfolds before you.
