“Another hurricane,” they cried, as the winds howled around the first Government House. Today, standing before the stately Government House in Castries, it’s hard to imagine the tumultuous history that unfolded on this very site. This isn’t just a building; it’s a symbol of Saint Lucia’s journey.

Government House serves as the official residence of Saint Lucia’s Governor-General. Perched atop Morne Fortune, it offers commanding views and a palpable sense of history. Construction on the present brick-built Government House began in 1894 and was completed in 1895. It replaced earlier structures that had succumbed to hurricanes and disrepair.

Initially, Government House served as the home and office for the Commissioners of Saint Lucia. Later, it housed the Administrators of the island. Since 1967, it has been the residence of the Governors, and after Saint Lucia gained independence in 1979, it became home to the Governors-General.

The story of Government House is one of resilience. The first house, built in 1817, was destroyed by a hurricane before it could even be completed. A second house, made of timber, was finished in 1819. This too fell into disrepair and was abandoned by 1865. For a time, Government House was relocated to nearby military barracks.

The current structure reflects Victorian architectural styles. Its brick construction and prominent location make it a recognizable landmark. While access to the interior may be limited, the exterior and surrounding grounds offer a glimpse into Saint Lucia’s heritage.

Government House has hosted several royal visits. In 1920, the Prince of Wales planted a Norfolk Island Pine here. Queen Elizabeth II held an investiture at Government House in 1966. She was accompanied by Prince Philip.

In 2015, Saint Lucia announced the installation of solar panels on Government House, a partnership with Solar Head of State. This underscored the island’s commitment to renewable energy.

Interestingly, there was considerable debate about the location of Government House. Several sites were considered, but the old Pavilion site was chosen due to the existing foundations and its proximity to the garrison on Morne Fortune. Concerns about the site’s health were dismissed by a Royal Engineer. He attributed past illnesses to the poor construction of the old building.

Even after completion, Government House faced criticism. Some considered it a costly extravagance. There were complaints about the Governor’s request for additional funds to furnish the building.

Today, Government House stands as a testament to Saint Lucia’s past and present. It’s a place where history was made and continues to unfold. As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the stories etched into its walls and the enduring spirit of Saint Lucia. Remember the hurricanes, the debates, and the royal visits that have shaped this iconic landmark.
