Has anyone ever told you about the hidden gem of Bonn’s former government quarter? Sankt Winfried. This unassuming church holds a fascinating story, intertwined with Germany’s political history. Sankt Winfried, nestled near the Rhine River and the remnants of a medieval mill, wasn’t always a quiet sanctuary. It was once the spiritual heart of West German politics, just steps from the Bundestag. Dedicated to Saint Boniface, the Apostle of the Germans, Sankt Winfried was consecrated in December 1968. The choice of patron saint was deliberate, a symbol of the church’s intended role in the nation’s political life. The architect, Kurt Kleefisch, designed Sankt Winfried in a modern style, incorporating a surviving millstone and an old cross into the church grounds. The church’s red brick and exposed concrete exterior might seem austere, but inside, a warm, inviting space awaits. Light streams through horizontal and vertical window bands, illuminating the white plastered walls and gray concrete beams. The altar area, crafted from gray-green dolomite, stands in quiet contrast to the red brick floor. The pews, designed by Kleefisch himself, are made from limed oak. For years, Sankt Winfried hosted the Bundestag’s services. This prominent role kept the church relevant, even as the surrounding government quarter underwent significant changes. The congregation dwindled from around 1,000 members to its current size of approximately 340. Today, Sankt Winfried serves not only its own small parish but also provides a home for the Foyer of the Jesuits, the Spanish-speaking community, and the Filipino community. It continues to be a vibrant meeting place for people of all nations and professions, a testament to its original mission. A unique feature of Sankt Winfried is its connection to the Salesian order. This globally active Catholic religious order has been responsible for the church since its inception. The Salesian Missions Procure, located at Sankt Winfried, works closely with international organizations and companies based in Bonn, as well as the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. This collaboration reflects the church’s ongoing commitment to serving the wider community and engaging with global issues.
