Hidden within Bonn’s Poppelsdorf neighborhood lies St. Sebastian Church. A silent witness to the growth of this vibrant area. Imagine Poppelsdorf in the late 19th century. The influx of university staff and company employees strained the small chapel at Poppelsdorf Platz. The need for a larger place of worship became clear. The Catholic Archdiocese of Cologne responded. Construction of St. Sebastian began in 1888, led by architect Gerhard Franz Langenberg. The design blended neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic elements, a hallmark of the Historismus period. Due to financial constraints, construction was divided into two phases. The choir and central nave were completed in 1890. The vestibule and facade, complete with a bell tower, followed in 1908. St. Sebastian Church stands as a testament to both faith and careful planning. In 1909, four bronze bells, weighing almost eight tons, were installed, cast by the Otto bell foundry of Hemelingen/Bremen. Three of these original bells still resonate from the tower today. St. Sebastian became the heart of Poppelsdorf. Serving the community and bearing witness to countless celebrations and quiet moments of reflection.
