Within these ancient walls echoes resound. St Remigius in Bonn stands before you. A Gothic masterpiece completed in 1307 its history stretches far beyond its imposing façade.

Originally envisioned as a monastery church St Remigius’s construction began in 1272 under the Franciscan Order. Dedicated to Saint Louis of Toulouse it wasn’t until 1806 that the church became associated with St Remigius. This occurred after the original St Remigius parish church was unfortunately struck by lightning in 1800.

The building has faced adversity. Brandenburg troops besieged Bonn in 1689 damaging the church. A fire in 1888 caused further harm. The Second World War brought more damage. Yet St Remigius endured.

From 1957 to 2007 the Franciscans once again cared for the church as a monastery church. In 2006 the independent parish of St Remigius merged with the parish of St Martin.

But St Remigius’s story intertwines with a more famous figure Ludwig van Beethoven. His parents Johann van Beethoven and Maria Magdalena Keverich married within these very walls on November 12 1767. Young Ludwig was baptized here on December 17 1770.

At twelve years old the prodigious Beethoven filled the role of the main organist. He played morning mass and became the assistant organist the following year. The church’s Baroque organ boasted 33 registers at that time the largest in Bonn. Sadly during the 1944 bombardment this magnificent instrument was destroyed. The organ’s console however survived. It now resides in the Beethoven House a testament to the church’s and the composer’s intertwined legacies.

Gaze upon the high pointed arches and the rose window installed in 1889. Notice the cross-ribbed vault dating from 1317. This is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Bonn. It is St Remigius a place of worship a historical landmark and a significant part of Beethoven’s life. A site worthy of your contemplation and respect.
