Could a church be caught between two oceans? Well, not literally of course. But architecturally? That’s the story of Sankt Markus Kirke right here in Aarhus. This church, completed in 1935, is a fascinating blend of architectural styles. The designer, Thomas Havning, envisioned it as a bridge between “two oceans”: the traditional medieval style and the trending functionalism of the time. He named his winning design “Mellem tvende Have” – “Between Two Oceans.” You can see this fusion in the church’s design. The traditional pitched roof and red brick construction harken back to classic church architecture. But the clean lines and uncluttered design show the influence of functionalism. Inside, Sankt Markus Kirke continues to impress. The bright, whitewashed walls create an airy atmosphere. The light oak used for the pews, pulpit, and altar adds a touch of warmth. The church’s layout, inspired by medieval basilicas, features a central nave that is elevated above the side aisles. This design creates a sense of grandeur and draws the eye upwards towards the heavens.
