Did you know that Sankt Maria Königin in Sankt Augustin emerged because of Bonn’s rise as the capital? The church’s story is intertwined with Germany’s post-war growth.

Sankt Maria Königin stands as a testament to faith and architectural vision. It reflects the rapid population increase in Sankt Augustin-Ort after 1949. Bonn’s capital status fueled this growth. In response, the parish of St. Maria Königin was founded on November 10, 1954.

Construction began on June 30, 1957. The church was completed in 1958. On July 28, 1959, it was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Wilhelm Cleven. Hanns Walter Lückerath and Helene Lückerath from Horrem designed it. Their architectural vision brought this sacred space to life.

Sankt Maria Königin is a hall church. It features a conical layout. Above the entrance is a freestanding bell tower. It is made of reinforced concrete.

Inside Sankt Maria Königin, several items are protected as historical monuments. A Mondsichelmadonna from 1480 is one. Also, there is a Pietà and two baroque candle holders from around 1700. A silk carpet depicting the crucifixion from the late 19th century is another treasure. Finally, there is an Annunciation group of four individual sculptures from around 1710.

The bells of Sankt Maria Königin ring out the “Gloria” motif. All three bells were cast in 1958. The Mabilon bell foundry in Saarburg used bronze. The first bell named Maria has the tone fis’. It bears the inscription: “Hail Mary, full of grace, Queen of Heaven and Earth. Always pray for us to God”. The second bell named Augustinus has the tone gis’. It reads: “St. Augustus, outstanding scholar, lead our restless hearts to the peace of God”. The third bell named Pius X has the tone h’. It says: “St. Pope Pius X, shining fire of the Church, renew everything for us anew in Christ”. C. Maercker, pastor at St. Maria Königin in St. Augustin in 1958, is also named on each bell.

Sankt Maria Königin stands not only as a place of worship. It also serves as a symbol of community growth and artistic heritage. Its history echoes the story of Sankt Augustin itself. The church reflects faith, art, and community. Take a moment to appreciate the history within these walls.
