Is this the peak of neoclassical architecture? Many say that Sankt Lukas Kirke is a prime example of this style. The church stands proudly on Sankt Lucas Kirkeplads, a testament to the architectural trends of the 1920s. Sankt Lukas Kirke was designed by the renowned architects Kaj Gottlob and Anton Frederiksen. The church was completed in 1926. However, the crypt beneath, with a capacity for 200 souls, was consecrated earlier in 1923. Sankt Lukas Kirke’s design echoes the grand vision of Frederiksbjerg, the neighborhood it calls home. This area, once part of the sprawling Marselisborg Estate, was envisioned as a harmonious blend of residential and recreational spaces. Ingerslevs Boulevard, a key element of this plan, was designed as a central axis. Sankt Lukas Kirke, with its tall tower, stands as a counterpoint to the neoclassical stadium at the opposite end of the boulevard. Interestingly, while most buildings in the vicinity are built of red brick, Sankt Lukas Kirke stands out in its majestic light gray limestone. This limestone, brought all the way from Faxe, gives the church a unique and striking appearance. The church’s minimalist design, both inside and out, further emphasizes its clean, almost puritanical lines.
