“Sankt Johannes der Taufherr – Der Patron der Wegmacher”. That’s what it says on the stone plaque under the sculpture, right? You wouldn’t know it just by looking at it, would you? You might think it’s just a random, old statue. But trust me, this is more than meets the eye. It’s a masterpiece! Built in 1905, this sculpture serves as a memorial to Saint John the Baptist. He was a real person, you know, a devout Jewish preacher who baptized Jesus in the River Jordan. He even preached about the imminent arrival of God’s Kingdom. Talk about bold moves! But his outspokenness got him in trouble with King Herod Antipas. He didn’t like the way John was criticizing his marriage, so he had him thrown in prison, and then eventually, he had him beheaded! But they didn’t stop there, they brought his head to Herod’s wife Herodias! They served it to her on a silver platter! It’s a pretty gruesome story.
This statue is a tribute to John the Baptist because of the message he preached: to make way for something new, to pave the way for better things. He stood up for what he believed in, even when it was dangerous to do so. And that’s exactly what this artwork symbolizes: the readiness to break down walls, to make change happen. He was a tireless and courageous advocate, and this sculpture celebrates that spirit. Remember, there are more interesting stories to be told throughout our tour, so keep your eyes peeled and listen closely!
