Did you know that Sankt Jakobus in Wurzburg was once a Scottish monastery? Picture this: The year is 1134. Bishop Embrico of Wurzburg has a vision. He wants to establish a place of worship dedicated to Saint James. Not just any place though a special sanctuary for monks from Scotland. This would become Sankt Jakobus.

Sankt Jakobus was founded as a Benedictine monastery. It was the third Benedictine abbey in Wurzburg. The first abbot Macarius arrived around 1139 with other monks from a monastery in Ratisbon. He’s even considered a saint today. His feast day is celebrated on January 24th.

Initially all the monks at Sankt Jakobus were either Irish or Scottish. However by 1497 their numbers dwindled. German monks took over. The abbey joined the Bursfeld Congregation in 1506. A significant figure Johannes Trithemius served as abbot from 1506 to 1516. He was a renowned humanist.

The monastery eventually died out in 1547. Its revenues were transferred to the Bishop of Wurzburg. It didn’t stay empty for long. At the request of another Scottish abbot it was restored to Scottish monks in 1595. It thrived for a time. Its last abbot Placidus Hamilton resigned in 1763 and went to London. He was quite learned but apparently a poor ruler.

After secularization in 1803 the complex became a Garrison Hospital. The sanctuary was used as a garrison church starting in 1904. World War II brought destruction. In 1945 the church was rebuilt and rededicated. It’s now known as the Don-Bosco-Kirche. Yet the legacy of Sankt Jakobus a place once home to Scottish monks remains. The story of Sankt Jakobus is a unique tapestry woven from centuries of faith persistence and change. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of religious devotion.
