Did you know that over 5000 people perished in a single bombing raid on Wurzburg? Their resting place is here at the Alter Friedhof. This isn’t just any cemetery. It’s a place that holds the weight of history. The Alter Friedhof opened in 1806. It’s located centrally within the city providing graves for all citizens. Right by the main entrance lies a mass grave. It’s a somber reminder of the devastating bombing on March 16 1945. A moving memorial stands nearby. Sculptor Fried Heuler created it. It features oversized stone figures lying down. The Wurzburg Reconciliation Bell is also here. You’ll find other memorial stones. They commemorate those who fell in the First and Second World Wars and the war of 1870/1871. The Alter Friedhof is more than just graves. It’s a place of peace. Its heart is a beautifully preserved chapel. It dates back to 1859. The chapel is open year-round. It offers a quiet space for reflection. Another significant monument is near the Annastrasse entrance. It’s called the Olberg. It’s a remarkable structure built in 1732. Balthasar Neumann designed it. Matthaus Kolb constructed it. It was moved to its current location in the Alter Friedhof from elsewhere in the city. The entire Alter Friedhof is surrounded by beautiful natural stone walls. Tall old trees provide shade. This blend of serenity and sobering history makes the Alter Friedhof so special. It tells the story of Wurzburg’s resilience and its enduring spirit. Come take a moment to reflect on the stories held within these hallowed grounds.
