Before you stands Sankt Cyprian a testament to resilience and faith. This modern church on Adenauerallee near the Rhine isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in brick and glass.

Sankt Cyprian is the parish church of Bonn’s Old Catholic community. Its history is deeply intertwined with the city’s rich past. The Old Catholic movement found a strong foothold in Bonn. Professors from the University of Bonn spearheaded this movement. They disagreed with the dogma of papal infallibility.

The community initially worshipped in the Jesu Church. That was from 1877 to 1934. Then they moved to their own building. This first church was a Friedenskirche built in 1934. Sadly it was destroyed in a World War II bombing raid in 1944. Only the steel skeleton and one bell survived.

Undeterred the community rebuilt. The current Sankt Cyprian designed by Otto Firle was dedicated in 1957. It’s named after Saint Cyprian of Carthage. A significant renovation in 1994 reoriented the church. The seating now surrounds the altar. The organ was moved to its former location.

The church’s exterior boasts a relief by Viktor Eichler. It depicts Christ as the Good Shepherd. Inside bronze doors display symbols. They represent the cardinal virtues outside and theological virtues within. The stained glass windows by Harry McLean bathe the interior in light. The building itself is a study in modern architecture. It’s steel and concrete clad in brick. The bell tower stands proudly above the Adenauerallee.

Beneath the church lie community rooms. These spaces foster connection and shared experiences. The five bells in the tower chime. One dates back to the original 1934 building. Sankt Cyprian is more than a place of worship. It’s a living legacy. It represents the enduring spirit of the Old Catholic community in Bonn. It’s a symbol of faith rebuilt and a faith that continues to flourish.
