Built in the 1970s Sankt Birgitta stands proudly in Unterhaching’s Fasanenpark neighborhood. This Roman Catholic church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the architectural style known as Brutalism. Imagine the bold lines of concrete. The stark simplicity of its design is striking. It’s quite different from the ornate churches we’ve seen so far.

Sankt Birgitta’s history is intertwined with the development of Unterhaching. As the Fasanenpark housing project grew starting in 1966 a new church was needed. Cardinal Julius Döpfner himself consecrated this building in 1971. The church’s dedication to Saint Birgitta of Sweden is interesting. It links this modern structure to the pilgrimage church of St Alto and Birgitta in Altomünster.

The architect Franz Xaver Gärtner masterfully captured the essence of Brutalism in Sankt Birgitta. Notice the square footprint of the building. The towerless structure sits slightly back from the street creating a spacious forecourt. The interior is equally captivating. The altar rests against the far wall. The only windows are four large skylights. They bathe the space in soft light filtering through the concrete ceiling.

One unique feature is the Stöberl organ. Installed in 1975 it boasts 18 registers across two manuals and the pedal board. The organ sits at ground level along a side wall. It’s a beautiful instrument.

Sankt Birgitta in Unterhaching is a hidden gem. It’s a powerful example of 20th-century church architecture. It’s a quiet sanctuary. It’s a place for reflection. It shows how faith and modern design can coexist beautifully. This simple yet striking church silently tells a story. It’s a story of faith community and architectural innovation.
