In 1913, the Steyler missionaries established the Saint Augustine Monastery. It was near the present town center. This monastery became a focal point. The municipality of Sankt Augustin wasn’t established until 1969. Then on September 6, 1977, Sankt Augustin received town privileges. This marked a significant step in its development.

Higher education also plays a role in Sankt Augustin. The Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences has a campus here. It offers degree courses in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Business Management.
