Was it truly possible for one person to change the course of history? Here at Sankt Ansgar in Bremerhaven, we remember a man who tried.

Sankt Ansgar was named after a remarkable figure. He was a missionary and archbishop. Ansgar lived over a thousand years ago. He dedicated his life to spreading Christianity across Scandinavia.

Ansgar was born near Corbie, France, in 801. He entered a Benedictine abbey. Ansgar became a powerful preacher and teacher. His journey began when he was sent to Denmark as a missionary.

Imagine the challenges he faced. Ansgar worked for three years. He ministered to the people. But he saw little success. Still, Ansgar did not give up.

When Sweden requested missionaries, Ansgar volunteered. He set out with another monk. Pirates captured them on the way. They suffered hardships. They finally reached Sweden.

Ansgar’s work led him to become Archbishop of Hamburg in 831. From there, Ansgar sent missionary priests to the Hanover area of Germany. He was known for his preaching. People knew of his love for the poor and sick. He lived a humble and prayerful life.

In 845, the Northmen invaded Hamburg. They burned it to the ground. Ansgar witnessed people return to paganism. Yet, his spirit remained unbroken.

Appointed Archbishop of Bremen, Ansgar resumed missionary work. He went to Sweden and Denmark in 854. Ansgar only asked for one miracle. He wanted God to make him a good man. He wished to give his life for his faith. He wanted to show love through martyrdom.

Ansgar died peacefully in Bremen on February 3, 865. He was buried in the cathedral. After his death, Sweden reverted to paganism again.

Despite facing defeat after defeat, Ansgar persevered. Bishop Rembert, his biographer, named him a saint. Pope Nicholas I later confirmed his canonization.

Ansgar’s life teaches us about love, devotion, sacrifice, and prayer. He gave himself to God and others. Sankt Ansgar reminds us of the Apostle of the North. May we remember his life and be winners in Christ.

Even though he faced many setbacks, his persistence planted a seed. Two centuries later, Christianity finally took root among the Vikings. His feast day is celebrated on February 3rd. It reminds us of his mission and care for the poor.

So, as you stand before Sankt Ansgar, remember the man behind the name. Think of his unwavering faith. Consider his dedication. Reflect on his impact on the world.
