Could a simple wooden staff bloom a miracle? Here at Sankt Adelheid in Bonn-Vilich, the story whispers yes. Sankt Adelheid, the first abbess of the monastery founded here in 978, became a beacon of hope during a devastating drought. The Rhine, lifeblood of the region, withered. Fields cracked, and despair settled like dust. Adelheid, seeing her people suffer, prayed for divine intervention. She then touched her staff to the parched earth. A spring, a “Pfützchen,” burst forth, quenching the land’s thirst and filling the people’s hearts with hope. This Pfützchen, now the Adelheidis-Brünnchen, still flows. It even gave its name to the beloved Pützchens Markt, a large fair held every September. This fair began centuries ago as a gathering of those who came to venerate Adelheid and seek healing from the spring. The convent, Sankt Adelheidis-Stift, also owes its existence to Adelheid. It became a haven for the Cellite Sisters in 1908. They cared for children and the sick and ran a kindergarten. The convent even served as a reserve hospital during World War I, sheltering orphans after the war’s end. The convent faced hardships in the 1930s with declining childcare and the damage from incendiary bombs in 1944. Yet, like the spring Adelheid discovered, life found a way. The convent was rebuilt and renovated, continuing its service to the community as a senior citizen’s home. So, as you stand here at Sankt Adelheid, remember the staff, the spring, and the enduring legacy of a woman whose faith blossomed into a miracle.
