Sanka the Pacifier Troll. A whimsical name for a whimsical sculpture. Here in Remiseparken, Sanka rests, a giant wooden figure crafted by the artist Thomas Dambo. He’s part of “The Great Troll Folk Party”, a project born from the unusual circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally intended to be a global undertaking of 25 trolls scattered worldwide, the pandemic shifted the focus to Denmark. Local volunteers rallied together, using their time and skills to help bring these imaginative creatures to life, right here in Denmark. Sanka, the Pacifier Troll, was unveiled on November 1st, 2020. His story revolves around a peculiar appetite. He loves pacifiers. Imagine, hundreds of children surrounding him, offering up their sutter, a delightful feast for this unusual troll. Big ones, small ones, blue, green, bear-shaped, or just plain orange. Sanka adores them all. He could lie here all day, watching his belly grow, content with his unusual diet. There’s a catch though. Sanka can’t stand the sound of crying children. The wails and sobs of the little ones as they relinquish their beloved pacifiers drive him mad. But Sanka is a clever troll. He’s composed a special song for the children to sing as they offer their sutter, a way to ease the transition, both for the children and for his sensitive ears. This unique sculpture isn’t just a piece of art, it’s an interactive experience. It invites you to think about the joy of childhood, the comfort of a pacifier, and the whimsical world of trolls hidden in plain sight.
