Didn’t know that Sangster International Airport was conceived in 1936? Well, it was. Welcome to Sangster International Airport, the gateway to Jamaica. This isn’t just an airport. It is a place steeped in history and buzzing with the energy of travelers from around the globe.

Let’s step back in time. The idea for Sangster International Airport sparked in 1936. People recognized this spot as perfect for an airport serving Montego Bay. Construction began in 1940. Finally, in 1947, the facility was completed.

Initially, it was named Montego Bay Airport. It quickly became a favorite destination for the rich and famous. Montego Bay was then, as it is now, a premier Caribbean vacation spot. The first international airline to land here was Pan American Airways, later known as Pan Am.

Pan American Airways managed the airport until 1949. Then the Jamaican government took control. The airport has undergone numerous upgrades since then. One significant change was the terminal’s location. It moved from the north side of the runway to the south side. This shift accommodated the growing air traffic.

In July 1955, plans were announced for a new terminal on the southern side. The original terminal opened on July 7, 1959. It could handle 500 passengers per hour. It also had parking for seven aircraft.

Over the years, Sangster International Airport continued to expand. By 2007, it was Jamaica’s largest international airport. It served approximately 3.7 million passengers annually. In December 2005, the new eastern concourse opened. Further expansions included a new customs hall. Also a new arrivals lobby and transportation center were added in March 2007. These improvements increased the airport’s capacity to nine million passengers per year.

Sangster International Airport is named after Sir Donald Sangster. He was a former Jamaican Prime Minister. The airport is operated by MBJ Airports Limited. Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico is the leading stakeholder. Vantage Airport Group holds a minority stake.

In 2009, the airport won the World Travel Awards as the Caribbean’s Leading Airport. It held this title from 2009 to 2017. Sangster International Airport is also among the top 20 most vulnerable international airports. This is due to climate change-caused sea level rise.

The runway is 2,653 meters long and 46 meters wide. It can accommodate large aircraft like the Boeing 747. In 2023, the airport managed over 5.2 million passengers and almost 45,000 aircraft operations. That is busy.

While here, be sure to look around. You can feel the vibrant atmosphere of this world-class airport. Notice the modern amenities. They blend seamlessly with the warmth of Jamaican hospitality. Remember the airport’s history. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a leading Caribbean hub, Sangster International Airport embodies the spirit of Jamaica.
