Did you know the Western Regional Health Authority plays a vital role in healthcare across western Jamaica? The Western Regional Health Authority oversees a network of hospitals and health centers. It ensures quality healthcare is accessible and reliable.

The Western Regional Health Authority’s mission is to provide top-notch preventative care. It also focuses on curative and rehabilitative health services. These services must be affordable to the region’s population. The Western Regional Health Authority aims to maintain facilities that promote health. It strives to attract and train highly skilled staff. They also provide opportunities for employee development.

The Western Regional Health Authority manages four hospitals and eighty-four health centers. These facilities are ranked by the services they provide. Type A hospitals offer comprehensive secondary and tertiary care. They serve as referral centers for public and private hospitals. Type B hospitals provide primary and secondary care. Type C hospitals offer primary care and basic secondary care.

Health centers also vary. Type 5 centers are comprehensive and located in urban areas. Type 4 centers manage parish health programs. They house the medical officer of health and parish staff. Type 3 centers are district headquarters. They serve around 20,000 people through smaller health centers. Type 2 centers offer more expertise than Type 1 facilities. They have a resident staff nurse for simple treatments. Type 1 centers are the smallest units. They provide basic maternal and child health services. They also offer nutrition, family planning, and immunization.

The Cornwall Regional Hospital is undergoing major rehabilitation. The Western Regional Health Authority is overseeing the phased reoccupation of the Cornwall Regional Hospital. Despite some delays, progress is being made. Key administrative staff are expected to reoccupy their section of the facility soon. The approach is to phase in floor by floor over time.

Improvements are planned for all four hospitals under the Western Regional Health Authority. These are Cornwall Regional Hospital, Falmouth Public General, Noel Holmes, and Savanna-la-Mar Public General. Cornwall Regional Hospital will receive a new CT scan machine. Digital X-ray machines are being installed at all hospitals.

A new generator will be installed at Savanna-la-Mar Public General. Upgraded operating theaters are coming to Falmouth Public General. Noel Holmes Hospital recently completed renovations. The maternity ward and minor operating theater are improved.

The Western Children and Adolescents Hospital is under construction on the grounds of Cornwall Regional Hospital. It is scheduled to be completed soon. This 220-bed hospital will serve children up to 18 years old.

Regional administrative staff will be housed in a retrofitted building on the Cornwall Regional Hospital compound. This will consolidate technical staff and other units. Several clinics are being refurbished across the region. A Child and Adolescent Therapeutic Centre is set to open.

The Western Regional Health Authority is collaborating with various organizations. They are rolling out a youth clinic. This initiative involves Sandals, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of National Security.

The Western Regional Health Authority continues to enhance healthcare services in western Jamaica. It focuses on improving facilities and expanding services. The authority is committed to providing quality care to the community.
