Have you ever wondered what secrets lie hidden beneath the rolling hills of Aarhus? It’s here, at Sandgravvold, that you might uncover a glimpse into the past. Sandgravvold is a medieval fortified site, a voldsted, located near Gammelgård South, just outside of Galten. Today, the site is almost invisible, the remains of the ancient fortification, erased by years of plowing. But beneath the seemingly tranquil landscape, stories waiting to be unraveled lie silent. A castle once stood proudly on Sandgravvold, perched on a man-made island in the old lake which dried up over time. The island is now just a slight rise in the field. Evidence of its impressive past is preserved in archaeological findings. The earthen bank surrounding the castle, built using stacked moss and driven poles, hints at the craftsmanship of its builders. Bricks, mortar, and roof tiles, discovered during excavations, whisper of the structures that rose on this very spot. The remains of post holes, where wooden posts were once planted deep into the ground, paint a picture of the castle’s wooden architecture. These remains, silent witnesses to the bustling life that once teemed here, paint a picture of a bygone era. Three swords, a knight’s armored glove, and other artifacts, all unearthed on this site, reveal stories of battles fought and lives lived within its walls. These finds and the remnants of a plank bridge, dating back to 1384, provide a connection to Sandgravvold’s history, linking the island to the mainland. The bridge stretched 300 meters northeast towards Klosterknoldene and spanned the lake. This place, now shrouded in silence, buzzed with life from the late 13th century to the mid-14th century, a time when powerful families like the Hvide clan owned the castle. Sandgravvold is a reminder that beneath the seemingly ordinary, tales of knights, battles, and daily life wait to be discovered, hidden within the earth, waiting for inquiring eyes to unveil their secrets.
